Starzyia Christmas in July: giveaway and sale

Starzyia etsy Christmas in July Sale

Starzyia etsy Christmas in July Sale

The thing I love about Christmas in July (CIJ) is that I’ve recovered from last holiday’s spending and am ready to start pacing myself tucking away the goodies I’ll need for this holiday, and I mean it this year, I’m doing it! I’m also giving you the chance to start doing that, my mailing list members have had the VIP treatment and started their shopping on the 1st July, now its time for everyone else – the sale is open now and finishes August 1st (2013)

You can find handmade symbolic, traditional, and healing jewellery and give something that is meaningFULL and inspiring. Its also worth remembering that you can get some wonderful, romantic, OOAK jewellery from my French collection that will serve as anniversary, engagement, birthday, and Valentine’s gifts and I’ve been blessed this year to have seen some of my romantic pendants go out as 10th Wedding Anniversary gift and Mother’s Day – I love to know this and am so grateful the feedback I’ve had from my gorgeous customers this year.

To shop in my CIJ sale, visit my etsy store Starzyia

You can save 15% on orders over $15 with the coupon code: CIJ15

You can save 20% on orders over $30 with the coupon code: CIJ20

Mailing list members also enjoyed an extra sale coupon of up to 25%

Speaking of my mailing list, here is the Christmas in July prize which one lucky newsletter reader will receive…

Victorian Rose Garden - Fairy Tale Prize

Victorian Rose Garden – Fairy Tale Prize

All members of the Starzyia mailing list will be entered into the draw (using random.org) to win the CIJ Prize Pack which has been inspired by The Victorian Fairy Tales. One lucky reader wins the lot: Victorian Rose Garden jewellery set – kilt pin brooch and earrings; And They Lived Happily Ever After pendant; Fairy Tale bookmark and gift tag set (4 tags); and shipping to either Australian domestic or international location. The draw is being held on July 25th, so if you want to win just sign up before then (now would be a good time, hint hint) and you can do that using the newsletter tab here on the blog (look under my banner image). I will only ever send members one email a month, which is a free newsletter giving you a heads-up and head start on all sales events, bigger discounts than the public and exclusive content you won’t find anywhere else.

Good luck everyone!

Featured Seller: David Wright from Bare Hands Personalised Jewellery

It’s time to meet another very talented and fascinating member of the handmade community, this time I’m introducing you to David Wright of Bare Hands Personalised Jewellery, so I hope you enjoy this feature and show David and his wife some wonderful support.
David of Bare Hands Personalised Jewellery

David of Bare Hands Personalised Jewellery

I’ll let David introduce himself in his own words:
Hello, we are Bare Hands Personalised Jewellery from the northern suburbs of Perth and are a  husband (mostly) and wife (sometimes), fairly new,  small business,  making items of jewellery from Fine Silver (99.9 %), mostly personalised – which can mean names stamping / messages, finger foot and hand prints  but more recently exploring more non-personalised ways to be creative with the silver making process. Yes you may think it odd for a male to be messing about in a studio getting in touch with his creative and some might say ( and have ) feminine side – but hey ho – its good for the soul! I also am a professional tiler and work 7 shifts a fortnight with guys with autism. In my spare time (what’s that ?) I spend time with my two lovely boys and enjoying playing saxophone.
Where did your creative journey begin?
I got the idea of taking this particular path from my sister in the UK who runs a similar, quite successful company ‘Lucy Locketts’ and originally thought of setting up a franchise of that, over here in WA. After thinking about it and googling for a teacher or course, we found someone very local offering the exact thing we were looking for, did it and never looked back – which was just as well remembering back to  some of the first items that we made! We’re also exploring the possibility of glass beading and have booked a course – silver and glass can look great together.

What inspires and excites you?
Hmm I’m a true believer that there is a greater intelligence at work constantly, and if we allow ourselves to trust in it, then inspiration and  creativity can flow freely without the need for too much thought – I certainly know this to be true with music. I like to let the customer provide inspiration for their own piece as obviously every customised item is different – its certainly exiting when it comes together and you get good feedback from the customer.

What is the biggest creative challenge you have faced and how did you overcome it (or are you currently tackling it?)

Pricing is a constant challenge, a battle of getting a balance between affordable and competitive yet making it worthwhile, please tell me I’m not alone here! (No David, not alone, I can hear the sighs of empathy rolling in from readers across the globe) Sometimes I just think ‘sod it’, its worth $X and I’m not selling it for any less. When people see a price sometimes, the natural reaction is ‘HOW MUCH!?’ but any small business owner would be able to give you a list as long as their arm about hidden expenses / time and not to mention for us , the price of silver. Sometimes I feel like explaining the whole process that goes into, for example, our miniaturised hand and footprints, stamped onto silver. I’m sure some people think we have a little elf that we summon whenever needed, to give us a quick dance and place his hand and feet into the silver for us.  At a market once, I was explaining that we not only offered fingerprint jewellery but hand and footprints too and pointed to a pendant I had made with our sons prints on, to which she replied in all seriousness  ‘Nah, their hands aren’t that small’

What dreams do you have for the future of your creative business?
I’d love for what we offer to grow to the point where our products become somewhat of a ‘brand name’  even if it’s just locally – just like people talk about other brands to us when sharing our excitement in what we’re doing. I think the key might be to be unique, remain true to yourself, have faith and anything is possible – you just have to create it. My sister and I remember a quote that goes something like ‘some people look at a rock and see a rock .. others see a cathedral’

How to connect with Bare Hands Personalised Jewellery and David:
Although I’ve only been on Etsy a few months, it looks like a great medium for being amongst like minded sellers and we also have a facebook page www.facebook.com/barehandspersonalisedjewellery – which has a back catalogue of items we have made in the past.  One awkward aspect of making everything to order is that you never have anything for display purposes as it goes out as soon as you’ve made it. You may notice the same names cropping up on some of our items – names of very patient family members who see pictures of something that they’d love to be wearing, but never actually receive!
I’d like to thank you David for being willing to be featured and sharing the beginnings of a very exciting journey into handmade, and wish you every happiness for the future.

$5 Earrings! Starzyia live market on facebook

I’m holding my very first live online market event through my Starzyia facebook page. This is a $5 Earring Market, everything in the album can be purchased for $5 plus an economic, capped shipping fee of $2 for Australian domestic orders and $5 for all international parcels. All earrings have been handmade by me and are lead and nickel free. Payments will be handled via paypal invoice, this means you get protection not only of keeping your financial details private, but of the paypal complaints resolution – meaning you have my word you will receive your goods and they will be in mint condition. There are almost 30 different designs which you can view in the market album, the first person to comment ‘sold’ under each design is the buyer, and therefore you must only comment ‘sold’ if you are committed to receiving and honouring a paypal invoice from Starzyia within 3 days of the close of the market.

The market is open now! and closes 6pm Sunday October 7th 2012 (Perth, Western Australia time)

I had so much fun working on this market that I really hope it will be successful, I’d like to hold a $10 market in two weeks time and perhaps some more closer to Christmas.

What’s New at Starzyia: Jane Austen Jewelry and Upcycled French-English Dictionary Pendants

My heart is in a glow! I have finally arrived at a point where I don’t need to rely on buying altered art images as digital collage sheets from other designers and can create my own both from my own art and from original source materials, in this case fashion plates from the regency period to create my own Jane Austen jewelry range. Pictured above is my ‘Heart In A Glow‘ pendant from my etsy store which is based on the novel Emma by Jane Austen. The first batch of six Starzyia designed pendants are currently in stock. Here is a look at the next batch:

win this pendant: sign up for my newsletter

To celebrate my new in-studio designed Jane Austen jewellery, and to help launch my once a month newsletter, I am going to give away the pendant above to one lucky subscriber. My newsletter is free and only comes once a month, it is a chance to see how I am growing, my hopes and dreams for the future, a behind the scenes look at the Starzyia studio and my life and world around me. There will also be forewarning of major sales events or giveaways, giveaways for subscribers only, and more! The prize pendant is a quote from Elizabeth Bennet of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and reads “My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me”, it comes on its own chain and I will ship it for free in its own special Jane Austen wrapping envelope that I designed for my range. To sign up for my newsletter click here. If you are already a subscriber you will automatically be part of the draw which is held on October 1st 2012 using an online randomiser. All subscribers on October 1st will be in the draw. The winner will be announced in my October newsletter which is sent via email the first week of October.

I am also excited to add upcycled vintage French-English dictionary pendants to my collection of upcycled hymn book and bible quotation jewellery in my etsy store. These have been so wonderful to create, they give me such a happy feeling as I work on them, I hope you can see why!

Belle & Beaux Peacock pendant was the very first design from this range that I added to my etsy store, it features the French and English words ‘bliss, bel, belle, beauty, handsome, beaux’ and would make a great, romantic gift or just something very special for a collector.

Newlywed Necklace: this versatile pendant would be great for a young girl, young bride, newlywed, or even someone who creates jewelry since it features the French and English words ‘jeune, young, young people, young girl, young man, newlyweds, youth, youthfulness, joaillerie, jewellery, jeweller’s, joaillier’

Hopefully I will continue to find plenty of vintage sources to upcycle for you and I will be creating new themed altered art collections too, I just had to start with Jane! being spring here and I’m overdue to re-read my favourites, lol.

Starzyia on Etsy, My Anniversary!

a selection of handmade jewelry from my etsy store across time

A special tribute to the people who have helped me along the way….

The first person I have to thank is Jace Yong, a beautiful and generous online friend I met via blog. Jace was the first person I ‘knew’ who had their own etsy store, and when I started I decided the most useful question I could ask, as the first few days passed without a sale, was how long she waited before she got her first sale. I thought I needed to put my expectations into perspective and learn what might be regarded as normal. Not only did I get an answer that helped relax my anxieties, but it turned out that before long had passed Jace became my first customer, buying two sets of gift tags (in those days I did offer a lot of cards, gift boxes, and tags). Jace also told me how useful being part of the Malaysian based etsy team had been for her and gave me the direct link to apply to become a member of DUST the Down Under Street Team, the very strong and wonderful Australian etsy team that has been an incredible source of support, information, and inspiration as well as friendship.

The DUST community has been incredible, any time I need advice the team chat and forum has been my first port of call. Through DUST I have had advice on resizing my early product photographs, improving my photography, my first crash course in SEO (thanks Ny), and a miriad of other business and promotional related questions the answers to which have helped keep the roof over my head.

Orange Lake tensha bead earrings by Raintree Atelier

The next big thank you goes to Gwen from Raintree Atelier. I ‘met’ Gwen after featuring some of her beautifully handmade earrings on the blog I had at that time,  I even said that she makes the kind of jewelry I wish I made. Back then, I was making whatever I possibly could using my very limited range of local suppliers… the jewelry that resulted from those efforts in no way resembled my own personal style, which is a lot more like Gwen’s beautiful and graceful creations. I was a little bit in awe… I wanted to transition from my very over the top, bold, and out of control designs to a more elegant and timeless look. I needed not only to alter my designs and learn additional skills, but I desperately needed to expand my list of suppliers and improve my photography so that I could present my jewelry as nicely as the wares on display in my favourite etsy stores. Gwen tried her very best to give me photo advice but it was not until I got my current camera that I was able to really utilise her tips, but I remembered everything she had recommended, and when the time was right, I think I achieved it. Cheers to a wonderful role model and friend!

button necklace by hundreds of buttons on etsy

My next thank you goes to a wonderful Australian etsian and DUST member Liz, from Hundreds of Buttons she probably does not remember this, but she was the first person to feature one of my creations in a treasury list. I was thrilled! That first year in business I think I sold 3 items (I was not producing the kind of jewelry I do now, and I was not working to promote the store or maximise my reach) so it was a very encouraging milestone to be included in my first treasury. Thank you Liz, you actually gave me hope in a bleak time and I have never forgotten!

my star button tshirt, the item Liz picked for treasury

Actually, as I said, I sold 3 items that first year, and this shirt is still available, haha! I think most people who liked it figured they’d just make one themselves! But if you’re interested…. let me know.

My anniversary thanks would not be complete without acknowledging my two greatest customers who between them have collected quite a few pieces of my work, Diane and Joanne, I love you two very much and I have always found your support and encouragement comes along right when I need it most. One of the most remarkable things to me is that you both bought jewelry from me in my early days when my pictures were blurry, washed out, or otherwise unprofessional, it warms my heart that you could see beyond the photograph to the merits of the jewelry itself and that you supported me when you could easily have shopped elsewhere. Now I am excited not only to create my jewelry but to arrange the photo shoots for all my products and to know that as I have grown, I have had my loyal friends and customers come along with me on my journey. Thank you!

On my 3 year journey, I have met so many people I cannot possibly thank all here by name, but I promise you that I remember the kind words, the encouragement, the generosity, the lovely customers, the people who have featured or promoted me (especially Samara from Maddabling; Jess from Full Spiral; and Zenobia Southcombe). I know who it is that buys my work, and I also know who supports me tirelessly by sharing my work and my page, clicking, liking, linking, commenting and inspiring me… everyone who is there when I need them, and who has helped me make it to April 13th 2012, my 3rd Etsy Anniversary, thank you.  You mean the world to me.

By the way, I have a 20% off coupon code running in my etsy store until Sunday night, the coupon code is ANNIVERSARY

New Handmade Creations… how I’ve been living and creating

Adore Me, Rose & Daisy Headband

I’ve been busily shopping for new supplies, and creating some lovely new handmade goodies for both of my online shops. The headband above is one of two new accessories in my madeit store the first two headbands I’ve ever made.

Rose Quartz Pendant Necklace

I’ve been creating new crystal healing gemstone necklaces and jewelry, every stone is hand selected by me for its quality shape, colour, and texture. I listed five new necklaces and two sold already, the rose quartz pendant pictured here is still available as are other pendants and gemstone bead jewelry in my etsy store. I am also busy wire wrapping some turquoise and jasper pendants.

Home Sweet Home, Earrings, in Purple

I have also had the joy of witnessing a native Australian orchid blooming in my back yard, it opens for one day only, alas it chose to open on a grey and bleak day, but I took pictures anyway… what do you think?
